Destructive winds and flooding will spread beyond the Florida coast.

The heaviest inland flooding risk is anticipated in the Appalachians, but a marginal risk extends to southern Indiana, Ohio, and the Washington, D.C. metro area, according to the National Weather Service. AccuWeather's Chief Meteorologist Jonathan Porter warned that Helene could trigger severe flooding in northern Georgia, upstate South Carolina, and western North Carolina. Flooding will arise from both pre-landfall rain and the intense downpours as the storm moves inland. Areas that recently experienced 2 to 8 inches of rain could see unprecedented rapid flooding. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin has declared a state of emergency as the state braces for significant rainfall on Friday and Saturday. On a positive note, heavy rains may help alleviate ongoing drought conditions in parts of Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky.
